Haier HNSE045BB 4.5 Cu. Ft. Black Compact Refrigerator Review

The Haier HNSE045BB is an unassuming little compact that retails anywhere from $145 to $280, depending on where you shop. Even at the low end of the price scale, however, we had enough issues with its usability that it overshadowed temperature performance.

Introduction

The Haier HNSE045BB is a traditional black mini fridge that retails for up to $282, but is found without much effort for as little as $145. There are still models available cheaper than that, and frankly, you may be better of looking for them. The Haier does a decent job at refrigerating food, the freezer shelf is effective—albeit a bit inconsistent—and energy ratings are some of the best we've seen on a compact. The trouble is, it's not terribly easy to use. Food can get lost in the back of the fridge (an almost impressive feat for a compact), the controls are arbitrary, and the freezer can be an absolute pain to get food into. Compacts are meant to be convenient and cheap; the Haier may be cheap, but it's far from the most convenient model that we've tested.
