Pre-fabricated homes may not be on most people’s radar, but at this year's Dwell on Design show in Los Angeles, they were everywhere.
More than a half dozen booths were occupied by pre-fab companies, and a few even had full-sized homes assembled on the show floor.
"The pre-fab industry has been around for 100 years," said Steve Glenn, CEO of LivingHomes. "The biggest part of that industry is mobile homes... but actually there are many people who do modular homes. And they can be very nice homes."
LivingHomes is a developer of modern, sustainably-designed pre-fab homes, and at Dwell on Design it showcased one of its lowest-priced units, the C6. It retails for $139 per square foot.
According to Mr. Glenn, the modules are all pre-built, so assembly is simple. "All finished plumbing and electrical is in the home, the tiles are in the bathroom grouted," he told us. "The only thing we have to do is get the modules together." With this design, LivingHomes was able to assemble its house on the show floor in just two hours.
After the home was assembled, it needed to be furnished. That's where Chairish came in. Chairish is an online retailer that helps people buy and sell "pre-loved" home furnishings. The company specializes in vintage furniture, and even gives you the option of shopping locally to simplify delivery.
The LivingHome on the show floor was furnished entirely with items found within a five-mile radius of the LA Convention Center. That’s what enabled Chairish to furnish the home from scratch in just three days.
