Editor's Note:

The Whirlpool WRT318FZDM (MSRP $849) is part of a new top-freezer lineup that is both attractive and—on sale for just under $700—surprisingly affordable.

From the outside, this model looks like just a basic 18-cu.-ft. top-freezer fridge. But open the door and you're greeted by design perks often omitted from fridges in this price range, like glass shelves and smooth-sliding drawers. There's even one drawer–the FlexSlide Bin–that can move from side to side depending on your storage needs.

It's not all positive: There's no ice maker or light in the freezer, door storage is fixed in place, and the main fridge compartment uses incandescent bulbs instead of smaller, brighter LEDs. However, fantastic energy efficiency and accurate temperatures mean this fridge punches way above its weight class when it comes to food preservation. We think that more than makes up for some slight inconveniences.

The WRT318FZDM is almost identical to the black WRT318FZDB and the white WRT318FZDW. It's the same size, has the same shelf layout and materials, and you should expect the same performance. The only substantial difference is purely superficial–it's got a monochromatic stainless steel finish.

Monochromatic stainless varies from actual stainless in a number of ways. Fingerprints, for instance, are easier to clean, but actual surface damage like scratches will be harder to repair. Also, unlike regular stainless, it works with magnets—great for households with small kids (or other aspiring artists).

This finish is a classy, neutral option that should work in most kitchens, and it's typically less expensive than regular stainless. However, this model is more expensive than its white or black alternatives: The MSRP is $100 extra, but prices at your local retailers may vary.
